Ava High School FCCLA is working with Allstate to begin a local chapter of SAVE, Students Against Violence Everywhere. Students will work to educate our community on violence prevention including bullying, and traffic safety. SAVE recognizes the impact young people can make on their community.

This school year we are promoting traffic safety for National Traffic Safety Month which is held each May. Texting and driving is our focus this year. Students have pledged to drive text free and have received cards, tattoos, silly bands, and thumb rings to help them remember Texting Kills.

Juniors Alex Cardone and Jake Dudley created a video to send a clear message that texting is dangerous. One message of the video is that while texting you are driving blind for five seconds. You car will travel the length of a football field in five seconds. Unlike other driving distractions, texting disconnects the brain from driving to handle the texting. Other distractions include eating, talking on the phone, and having too many passengers in the car.

Students and other community members who want to join SAVE may sign up this month and we will begin next school year with a traffic safety activity the entire community can be a part of and our students can learn leadership skills. Contact LeeAnn Tomlinson at Ava High School for more information or to join.
